Darwin Day 2014

Presented by John August and Victor Bien

This will be our 2014 celebration of Charles Darwin`s theory of evolution (now more accurately thought of as the law of evolution).

John August's talk will be on Abiogenesis:

John will look at the nature of chemical molecules and how chemical species acting as catalysts can ratchet up quantums of energy to power certain reactions generating more and more complex molecular structures. This allows speculations of plausible mechanism by which self-replicating molecules could come about - that is the evolution of life from inanimate molecules. This is a possible mechanism for the origin of life on earth separate from another proposed mechanism of asteroid "seeding" earth following one or more crashing in.
Unfortunately John himself will be away but his talk in Power point form will be given by Victor Bien.
This year Victor Bien will review our last dozen Darwin days. This will refresh memory of the topics covered, our experience in running these events and some interesting stories of associated events.

These talks are intended to stimulate questions and discussion.

Charles Darwin (b. 12 Feb 1809) whose promulgation of the Theory of Evolution, or descent with modification through natural selection, has had as profound an effect on how we view and understand the natural world as any other scientific theory ever proposed.

Some key points from the article: Darwin introduced historicity into science (chemistry and physics do not have this character); he rejected all supernatural explanations; he refuted typology or essentialism -which says living things are invariant and stable, they are not; variation characterises living things, refutation of typology amounts to refutation of racism amongst other things...
