Darwin Day 2012 Presented by John August and Victor BienThis will be our 2012 celebration of Charles Darwin`s theory of evolution (now more accurately thought of as the law of evolution) . John will draw from the views of Dr Gary Galambos, a consultant psychiatrist in private practice. Evolution tells us that we have evolved adaptively, but we are also aware of many different "mental disorders" where something goes wrong. How can this be? How can it be that the brain is so "problematic"? And can evolutionary persectives
help us understand the different ways our brain's operation can go wrong? Dr Galambos (not the only person interested) has outlined an approach to this problem, within what is called "Evolutionary Psychiatry".
For those interested, John August may screen the satirical video "Domesticating Vampires".. There will be time for questions and discussion. Charles Darwin (b. 12 Feb 1809) whose promulgation of the Theory of Evolution, or descent with modification through natural selection, has had as profound an effect on how we view and understand the natural world as any other scientific theory ever proposed. |
Some key points from the article: Darwin introduced historicity into science (chemistry and physics do not have this character); he rejected all supernatural explanations; he refuted typology or essentialism -which says living things are invariant and stable, they are not; variation characterises living things, refutation of typology amounts to refutation of racism amongst other things...
